The Michigan State Spartans are a team with a long history rich with basketball tradition. The team has appeared in 25 NCAA tournaments, 8 Final Fours and has won 2 National Championships. The first of those championship teams were the 1979 Michigan State team lead by Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson. Under coach Jud Heathcote, the Spartans were pitted against the undefeated Indiana State Sycamores led by Larry Bird in the ’79 Championship game. It was also the first widely televised NCAA tournament and is still viewed as one of the biggest events in helping make ESPN a household name. Led by MVP Magic Johnson, Greg Kelser and Jay Vincent the Spartans became national champions.
