The Indiana State Sycamores basketball team had their debut season in 1896, making them the oldest basketball team in the NCAA along with Bucknell, Minnesota and Washington University. The Sycamores have compiled more than 1300 wins during that time along with 23 post season appearances and 5 national championship appearances (2 NCAA and 3 NAIA). The greatest of Sycamores seasons was the magical run they made in 1978-1979 when star Larry Bird led the undefeated team to the national title game against the Michigan State Spartans led by Magic Johnson. They would finish the year as national runner-up with a 33-1 record. Beyond Larry Bird, past coaching great John Wooden was also attached to the Sycamores program.
