The first collegiate team began playing in Dayton during the 1903-1904 season – known as the St. Mary’s Institute. “The Saints” later changed their named to The University of Dayton in 1920 and gradually became known as the “Flyers”. The Flyers have since made 14 NCAA tournament appearances, one Final Four and two Elite Eight trips. The 1984 Dayton Flyers were led by Roosevelt “Velvet” Chapman who stands as the all-time leading scorer in Dayton history. The ’84 squad entered the tournament as a #10 seed and proceeded to upset #7 LSU, #2 Oklahoma and #6 Washington before falling to the eventual national champion Georgetown Hoyas 61-49 in the Elite Eight.
